Ashiana Humanitarian Network was proud to welcome participants to their first Youth Activate! workshop made possible with the generous support of the City of Canning.

This workshop addressed topics including:

(a) Road traffic law and motor vehicle accidents, presented by Amber Cooper of the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre

(c) Cyber safety – including bullying and scams – also presented by Amber Cooper

(d) Crime and police – your rights as a young person – presented by Claire Rossi of Legal Aid WA‘s Youth Law Team

(e) Community supports – programs educating and supporting young people relating to family violence, presented by Diyanne Dushime of Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health Service, and sporting programs that help build understanding with local law enforcement, presented by Richard Changadzo of Perth African Nations Sports Association (PANSA).

The workshop was held on 27 September 2025 at the Hillview Intercultural Centre in Bentley, as part of the City of Canning, and was the recipient of the City’s Youth Grant this year. The workshop focused on how young people from refugee and humanitarian background could be supported to learn about their rights and responsibilities in the law, so that they could self-advocate and also share their knowledge with their families and others in the community. It allowed people to ask questions about their personal experiences and to realise that they are not alone, particularly where the law can be more challenging when cultural, linguistic and trauma circumstances are involved. It also allowed Ashiana to show what services and supports are available to support the community, through Community Legal Centres, Legal Aid and community services and to encourage young people to drive greater understanding and awareness in their communities and get involved.

Our next workshop will be held at the Tuart Hill Community Centre, Grenville Reserve, Cape Street, Tuart Hill on Saturday, 29 November 2025 from 9:30am to 2:30pm and will focus on workplace rights, housing and tenancy rights, and cyber scams. It is proudly supported by the City of Stirling.
