Ashiana Humanitarian Network was pleased to welcome women to their inaugural workshop sponsored by the WA Department of Communities as part of their Women’s Grants for a Stronger Future held in partnership with Cyril Jackson Senior Campus.
The day commenced with storytelling from members of the refugee and humanitarian community in Perth about their journey to Australia and the opportunities and struggles they have faced. This included women who had recently arrived in Australia and those who were more established.
Ashiana was pleased to welcome Bellamore Ndayikeze of Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health Services to speak about the various health and wellbeing programs and services they offer to women from multicultural communities. Roya Ansari spoke about the unique programs offered by Cyril Jackson Senior Campus and the targeted support offered to those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, many of whom are refugees and humanitarian entrants. We were also proud to see how many of the women present shared their knowledge and offered support to those who had struggled to secure recognition of prior skills and learning and to secure their independence. It showed how, when women come together, they build and strengthen communities.
Ashiana was also pleased to work with a number of suppliers of goods and services who were also women from refugee and humanitarian backgrounds in delivering the workshop and the wonderful food, music, art, dance and language that was shared. These included Halima Mozaffari, whom Ashiana recently supported in her exhibition at the Shopfront Gallery at North Metropolitan TAFE, Marmari’s Cafe & Bakery, S&F DJ Entertainment, Fahima Jamy and Roya Ansari. We also could not have achieved what we did without the tireless support of our volunteers, and the generous contribution of Cyril Jackson Senior Campus in hosting the event at the school.
We look forward to welcoming women to our second workshop in August which will focus on economic independence and education, and our third workshop which we expect to hold in around October. We will be sharing further details of the workshops in the coming weeks.
