Ashiana is lucky to have on its Board members of the community who have a strong and long-standing commitment to advancing access to justice, particularly in support of refugees and asylum seekers, including Chairperson Dr Mary Nangrahary, Director, Farid Popal, Director, Robert Lindsay, and Director and Company Secretary, Maria Lamattina.
Ashiana’s directors took time to celebrate the achievements of its Board and their recent recognition by the Attorney General in WA.
Maria Lamattina was awarded the Attorney General’s Community Service Law Award at a Law Society Gala on 27 October 2023 for service to the community over the past two decades, including in support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, refugees and asylum seekers, both in terms of governance of community organisations, and direct advocacy in Courts and Tribunals.
This follows the recognition of fellow Director, Robert Lindsay, who was also awarded Attorney General’s Community Service Law Award in 2022 for 50 years of service in Australia and overseas, and who counts among his many achievements, seminal decisions in refugee and administrative law, including the High Court decision in Chen Shi Hai which is cited around the world.
