Last month Ashiana Humanitarian Network continued its tradition of celebrating Harmony Day at Cyril Jackson Senior Campus. Our director, Farid Popal, provided information and activities for students to learn about the struggles faced by refugees and humanitarian entrants, and also general information about supports and services available through Ashiana and the general community. It was a great opportunity to continue to grow our partnership with Cyril Jackson, which is a strong supporter of Ashiana and has a large number of students from refugee and humanitarian backgrounds at the school.
The support offered by Cyril Jackson through its Intensive English Centre is a lifeline for many of these students and supports their pathway to higher learning in Australia. One of Ashiana’s members, Roya Ansari, works as part of that program at Cyril Jackson and speaks very highly of the effectiveness and outcomes achieved. Ashiana believes that IEC programs should be available at all schools to meet the needs of all students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in Australia, and calls on governments to provide much needed funding to make this a reality.
Following the great success of our women’s workshops last year, Ashiana’s focus will be on supporting refugee and humanitarian youth in 2025. We are planning workshops to be held in northern and southern locations, so watch this space for further details!
